The company that makes Crestor, Schering-Plough Co., and Schering-Plough Corp. was one of a growing number of companies that were able to produce generic versions of the drug, according to a new analysis.
The research, conducted by the pharmaceuticals giant, made it possible for consumers to take a generic version of AstraZeneca’s drug, the company said in a release. Crestor, the brand name for Crestor, was a generic version of AstraZeneca’s blockbuster drug, Vioxx, that had been on the market since 1987, the company said.
It wasn’t just the company’s research that revealed the dramatic price hikes.
“Crestor was priced more than any other statin drug, and the price is far higher than any other statin,” said William J. Schiller, a senior scientist at the University of Minnesota who conducted the research. “It was one of the most dramatic price hikes in the history of drugs.”
Schiller said his company’s research found that, compared with the blockbuster drug Vioxx, Crestor was “one of the most expensive drugs that was going to be available.”
But AstraZeneca, which is the drug’s manufacturer, said the price hikes “have been passed on to the consumer,” adding that the company had no way of knowing how much the company paid for the drug.
The drug maker, Schering-Plough Co., agreed to settle the issue with Schering-Plough and agreed to provide the company with a refund of $10 million from the government and a payment of $5 million from AstraZeneca to cover the cost of the generic version.
AstraZeneca agreed to sell the drug in the United States under the brand name AstraZeneca.
“It’s not going to be the same company,” said Schiller, whose team led the research. “It’s a small group of people, who are all in a very unique situation to have this deal.”

A new study shows that a high dose of Crestor can boost its ability to prevent muscle damage. The drug works by blocking the enzyme that causes muscle to shrink.
The findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine in on Tuesday.
The study, involving more than 40,000 adults, was published in the journal, and the study compared Crestor with a placebo and a high-dose of a drug that was already used for several years to see if it improved muscle damage. Participants were randomly assigned to either take the drug or the high-dose of the drug, which is not included in the study.
"The results showed that Crestor (rosuvastatin) improved muscle mass and strength in the majority of participants, but it did not improve the risk of muscle damage," said study author Dr. Robert H. Stokes of the Cleveland Clinic, who was not involved in the study.

"I think it is a very safe medicine and that's the main reason that this study is important," said study author Dr. Jeffrey Zuckerman, a professor of medicine and psychiatry at Northwestern University.
"And the fact that there were so many different types of muscle damage, and it was really low risk, makes me think that it might help with that kind of side effect."
The findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and a major North American company, has launched two clinical trials to see if Crestor can reduce the risk of developing muscle damage.
Crestor, an oral medicine, is also used to treat high cholesterol, a condition in which your cholesterol levels are higher than normal.
"There's been a lot of research on this, but the results are quite promising," said Zuckerman. "But Crestor is probably the one that is most likely to reduce muscle damage."
The study, which was designed to assess the effect of Crestor on muscle health, compared the drug with a placebo and a high-dose of a drug that was already used for several years to see if it improved muscle damage.
The results showed that Crestor improved muscle damage in about 80% of participants, compared with only about 20% in the placebo group.
Zuckerman and his colleagues noted that Crestor's effect on muscle damage could be particularly beneficial in the treatment of certain types of muscle-related problems.
"This is an important study, because it is a very promising, but it was something we didn't know about," he said.
Crestor is available over-the-counter and can be taken in pill form, but it's important to be cautious.
Dr. David F. Huxley, a professor of medicine and psychiatry at Northwestern, who also was not involved in the study, said the drug's effect on muscle damage was limited.
"I think it's a very good finding, because it does seem to be more of a long-term side effect than the others that were reported by other studies," he said.
He noted that Crestor does not seem to have a direct effect on muscle damage.
"It does seem to be a pretty good side effect and that's a good thing," he said. "It can be seen in people who take it for years and the long-term effects are not as good as with the other other drugs."
Crestor was shown to be effective in reducing the risk of muscle damage in about 80% of participants.
The study was funded by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals and has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
The researchers said they are now evaluating the results of the study to see if Crestor is working to improve muscle damage.
